If you’ve ever been at a conference where everyone seems to know everyone except you, you know that quiet weight in your chest. You grab a coffee, pretend to scroll your phone, and wonder if you belong.
You do. And here’s a story that proves it.
Mateus’ Moment
At Laracon US, my friend Mateus (@mateusjatenee) noticed a developer standing alone. Instead of walking past, he said hello, asked a couple of questions, and learned the guy really wanted to meet someone from the @laravelphp core team—but felt too shy to approach.
Mateus said, “Wait here.” He went over, brought a core team member back, and made the intro. A few minutes later, he even introduced this shy developer to Taylor.
By the end of the day, the guy was smiling, chatting, and meeting new people. One kind gesture changed his whole Laracon.
I’ve Been There
I know that feeling well. On my early conferences, I felt like an imposter too. Today, I’m active in the Laravel community, I organize Laravel meetups in Serbia, and I’m lucky to know many wonderful folks across the ecosystem. If you ever need a bridge, I’m here.
My Offer
If you see me at @laraconus, @laraconeu, or @laraconin and you’re feeling shy or alone—come to me.
I’m like a Laravel Social API — make a request, and I’ll fetch you some friendly humans.
Some folks even joke I should be called “Uncle Vlad”… let’s see if it sticks. 😉
I won’t be at @laraconau this year, but I’m sure someone from our amazing community will gladly play this role there too. No one should feel left out at Laracon—no matter where it’s happening.
Let’s Make It Easier for Everyone
A few ideas we can try together:
A small “Bridge Crew” badge for people happy to help with intros.
An introvert‑friendly corner—a spot where it’s safe and easy to start conversations.
A pre‑conference chat on Telegram or Discord, so first‑timers can meet a friendly face before day one.
If you have ideas to make Laracon even more welcoming, I’d love to hear them. Drop a comment on my tweet here.
Let’s make sure nobody stands alone at Laracon. 💛
