Code, Stress, and Recovery: My Path to a Healthier Developer Life

by Vladimir Nikolic, CEO Coding Wisely

From Struggle to Strength: My Journey Through Fear, Burnout, and Recovery

For years, I lived with a quiet fear that never fully left my mind.

The fear of losing my job. The fear of losing clients. The fear of not making enough money to support myself and my family. The fear of failing.

If you’re a developer, a freelancer, or someone building a business, you probably know what I’m talking about. The pressure to stay relevant, to deliver results, to always be productive—it never stops. And if you don’t manage it, it slowly starts breaking you down.

The Breaking Point

I pushed through for a long time, ignoring the signs. I worked long hours, skipped workouts, ate whatever was convenient, and told myself that I just needed to "grind harder." But the stress kept piling up. I lost sleep. My energy dropped. My health suffered. The constant anxiety of losing work or disappointing clients made every day feel like a battle.

Then it got worse.

One day, while out in a shopping mall, I suddenly felt my body give up on me. I fainted. I woke up in the emergency room, diagnosed with a panic attack and dangerously high blood pressure. It wasn’t the first time I had ended up in the ER due to stress. My body was keeping score, and I was paying the price.

At 57 years old, I realized I couldn’t keep going like this. My body was sending me a clear message: change or collapse.

The Turning Point

I realized that if I kept going down this path, I would crash. Hard. I had to make a change, not just for my work but for my life.

That’s when I decided to take wellness and fitness seriously.

It wasn’t an overnight transformation. I started small. Regular walks. Eating better. Prioritizing sleep. Eventually, I added workouts, better time management, and boundaries around work. And little by little, things started changing.

I had more energy. My focus improved. My stress became manageable instead of overwhelming. I still had fears and challenges, but I felt stronger, both mentally and physically, to deal with them.

What I Learned

1️⃣ Your health is your foundation. Without it, everything else crumbles. 2️⃣ Fear is normal, but it shouldn’t control you. The key is learning to navigate uncertainty instead of being paralyzed by it. 3️⃣ Productivity isn’t just about working more. It’s about managing your energy, not just your time. 4️⃣ Success isn’t just about work. It’s about balance—between work, health, relationships, and self-care. 5️⃣ You are not alone. Many developers, founders, and freelancers go through this. If you’re struggling, know that change is possible.

Practical Steps for Overcoming Stress & Rebuilding Yourself

✅ Breathing Techniques – Simple breathing exercises to calm your nervous system in stressful situations. (I’ll share some step-by-step techniques in future posts.) ✅ Desk Exercises – Easy movements to relieve tension when working long hours. ✅ Mental Reframing – How to shift negative thoughts and reduce fear of failure. ✅ Short Workouts – Simple movements you can do in your room or at your desk to improve focus and reduce stress. ✅ Daily Recovery Rituals – How I reset after a long workday to avoid burnout.

My Message to You

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, burnt out, or afraid of the future—I see you. I’ve been there. But I also know this: You can overcome it.

Your career doesn’t have to come at the cost of your health. Your success doesn’t have to be fueled by stress and exhaustion. There is a way forward where you feel strong, clear-headed, and in control again.

This is what I’ll be talking about more—developer wellness, overcoming burnout, handling fear, and finding a sustainable way to thrive. Because this isn’t just about surviving the grind; it’s about building a life where you actually feel good.
